The Lion and the citadel
Carved from pink Vosges sandstone by Auguste Bartholdi, the Lion of Belfort honours the city’s resistance in 1870. 22 metres long and 11 high, it is impressive at close quarters. Just above, the Vauban citadel offers a 360-degree panorama of the city, the Savoureuse and the first hills. The place lends itself to a date part solemn, part cheerful.
Old Town and Place d’Armes
At the foot of the rock, the old town of Belfort lines up brightly painted facades in a coherent Vauban setting. Place d’Armes and Saint-Christophe Cathedral form its heart. Terraces multiply in fine weather and festivals — Eurockéennes, FIMU — pace the year. A coffee, a regional beer, then a walk: a classic but always effective date.
Étang des Forges and nature
To the north, the Étang des Forges, the green lung of Belfort, can be walked or cycled around on a 4-kilometre loop. Fishermen, swans and joggers share the banks. On Lyad, Belfort members share their favourite spots and trails; it is up to you to find someone to walk the loop with.
